The Quran’s Deadly Role

…in the Belgium Slaughter
Western recruits for jihad are inspired by the literal interpretation of Muslim sacred texts. This is what we must fight.
This article in USA Today comes from Dr. Nabeel Qureshi who is with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. My unbelief is that a major US news site is putting up this type diagnosis so quickly after the Islamic attack on Europe.
Islam’s jihadists are in a holy war with the world. It seems the jihadists have focused for the moment on Europe. There will likely be more attacks in Europe per Dr. Qureshi’s analysis and interpretation of the Quran. It seems there will always be militant aspirations among young muslims.
Americans awoke this morning to another terrorist attack — this time in the Brussels airport and subway.
Watch out America! You will see more attacks also! That is inevitable. I am a Christian and Jesus wants peace. I want to love my Muslim neighbors. Some in the Muslim community make that very hard to do! I have been to the local mosque at Ramadan. The local mosque invites in outsiders during that time.
How is this happening? Why are people becoming radicalized, and so close to home? I am concerned how little we in the West understand why peaceful Muslims who live among us are drawn into radical Islam.
Over the last several years the prominent layman speaking for that mosque addresses us. He speaks with contempt, not towards us, but towards America and American values. It is as if he knows nothing about America’s founding. If he knows about the longing for religious freedom of the pilgrims or for freedom in general, he doesn’t indicate that matters. He just sees problems for freedom for Muslims. The world is against him and his Muslim faith and he stops short of saying that we will take up a sword and fight against those who come against us. However, someone uninformed about American history and the struggle and quest for freedom could believe that war and fighting is the only way to achieve the values that this well-educated spokesman proposes.
I can only assume this line of thinking and rationale is constantly being promoted in the mosques across America by layman, Imams, and clerics.
More of what Dr. Qureshi relayed:
In February 2015, the U.S. State Department Acting Spokesperson Marie Harf suggested that a “lack of opportunity for jobs” might be a significant factor in radicalization and terrorism.
Not so fast! And. Not totally accurate. However, this statement is scratching at the surface of the issue. People who find themselves in a world that is not offering them what others seem to have, turn to alternatives including theologies which give meaning and purpose especially to an oppressed life.
ISIL enjoins upon Muslims their duty to fight against the enemies of Islam and to emigrate to the Islamic State once it has been established.
This is more to the heart of the matter and a view into how we got here.
ISIL’s propaganda magazine, Dabiq, appeal to prospective recruits to leave their homeland and emigrate to the Islamic State by quoting a hadith … it urged them to realize that they are living in times that reflect those of the earliest Muslims … take a step of faith by quoting the Quran … Such is the frequency and intensity with which ISIL uses Islam’s foundational texts to appeal to potential recruits.
The Quran itself reveals a trajectory of jihad … Muhammad’s message featured violence with increasing intensity, culminating in surah 9, chronologically the last major chapter of the Quran … Throughout history, Muslim theologians have understood and taught this progression…
Muslim thought leader, Maajid Nawaz:
We Muslims must admit there are challenging Koranic passages that require reinterpretation today. … Only by rejecting … ISIS-style slavery, beheading, lashing, amputation & other medieval practices forever … Reformers … win … In other words, Muslims must depart from the literal reading of the Quran in order to create a jihad-free Islamic world.
Dr. Qureshi was shown a radically different way forward:
As I faced the reality of the violent traditions of Islam, I had a Christian friend who suggested that Islam did not have to be my only choice and that there were excellent reasons to accept the gospel.
This gospel is the starting point in helping jihadists rest.
We need to be equipped to provide alternatives to violent jihad, alternatives that address the root of why so many Muslims are radicalizing in the first place. Any solution, political or otherwise, that overlooks the spiritual and religious roots of jihad can have only limited effectiveness.
I am thankful for those with insights into the jihad problem. Dr. Qureshi is much closer to the issues than I. Here he gets to some of the root issues driving jihad activities in the world.
