The Church — the ultimate Community

…a fellowship desires to protect you… That’s one of the themes from The Lord of the Rings. As a Christians, and for most of my life, I wished that were true.

But, it is true. It is true because Jesus said similar things. What similar things?

When you see fellowship on this page, let’s get a much bigger view than say a local church, a Sunday school class, or a small group.

In The Lord of the Rings, the fellowship was a small group of men–about 8 or 9 I believe. But is God’s realm, fellowship is the small group you are in or your local church but as I said, we need to think big if we are to get a sense of what God wants to pull off for us.

Hebrews 11 speaks about a “cloud” of witnesses and there the implication is that they are surrounding us. The last verse of chapter 11 talks about perfection and seems to tie their perfection to our perfection. So, for that reason they’d love to see us finish and finish well. They are a part of our fellowship, surrounding us and cheering us on.

God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit, are also a part of our fellowship. The Holy Spirit is even referred to by Jesus as our comforter. Rounding out our fellowship is the local body of believers we are connected to. That connection is important because it is through that connection so many times we are ministered to by God. He works through His Body–His Church. I am emphasizing this, His Body, because that’s the part I missed when I was a young Christian. That is a part of the fellowship that so many followers of Jesus miss today and they are loose out because of it.

In the spring of 2013 I took a trip to Japan. During that time I was reading the first half of the book of Acts of the Apostles. I began to get a clearer picture of what God is doing with His Church.

If you are out there and you are headed down the road, just you and Jesus, then I have to say because of what I have learned the hard way myself, you are asking for trouble. Why would I be so brave? There is a battle being waged and the evil one is seeking to take us down. So many fall victim to his schemes and so easily. For that reason, all believers need to be vitally connected to Jesus through His body for support and encouragement. You need support more than you know you need it. God comes down and works as His Church works together to bring Him glory. He ministers uniquely through this body, His Body.

As you take advantage of the larger fellowship, including His local Body, you are under His umbrella of protection. That is the safest, driest, most comforting place to be.

  1. “We should not stop gathering together with other believers, as some of you are doing. Instead, we must continue to encourage each other even more as we see the day of the Lord coming” (Heb 10:25 GW). In whatever form your local circle takes, traditional congregation, house church, study group, and others, stay connected! Right on…
