What does it take to change? No, I don’t mean to world, I mean you!
Change is very hard. Most change efforts fail. We are Christians (Jesus followers) we MUST change. How so? II Corinthians 5:17. He promises to make us into new creatures–to make all things new inside us. Change is still so very hard.
How do I change?
Change is hard and Jesus knew it would be. Yes, He promised to make all things new inside of us but that verse did not say it would be easy.
How do we do it?
Someone shared with me a secret. No, it is not fool-proof. I expect very few people who read this are affected by it in any significant way. However, it helps me so much to write down my thoughts about change–about how I desire change in my life. This is my effort to put a stake in the ground, asking, pleading with God to help me in my change effort.
So what was shared with me? Much was shared over the last couple of years, but specifically about how Christians change just 4 simple points. We need truth. We need energy to make change happen. We need a path to make the change happen and we need support to reinforce the change.
Here are just a couple of thoughts on these 4 elements. We have the truth, contained in God’s Word–the Bible–Old and New Testaments. However, to go with that we need a desire inside us to was to dig out what is there from God for us.
Energy comes from the God-given desire inside us–the desire, not even to change, but simply to seek Him above all else. If we seek Him, He will give us the energy to continually seek out what He has for us.
Once we have the energy, given by God, the path will become obvious. The path, I contend, includes a daily seeking of God and His presence through His Word. That is a formula for a miracle or many miracles. I know that I need Him daily. I know that He desires to show up and show me Truth for me for the day, during the day. As I allow him to reveal His Truth, the path becomes obvious. It is this connection to His that allows/provides the path forward.
God has designed us to be in community with fellow believers and followers. In community we get support and encouragement. Please don’t think the way I did for many years of my life. Me and God, we are the team. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Yes, but the “how to” is expressed in the rest of the Word He gave us. His design involves a supporting community. We surround ourselves with that community for the encouragement we need during easy and difficult times. He wants us surrounded be other believers. We need His wisdom to develop the support system before the trials appear.
I’ve had three great brothers around me over the last two years. They were invaluable in my struggle to seek God’s truth and in supporting me in other ways.
Any time you see LR in the title of a blog this year, it stands for Lord of the Rings. It’s a hint that the blog is about the themes delivered in the Lord of the Rings trailer.
